Dmitry Medvedev sworn Russian President

by Nksagar @ 2008-05-08 - 10:48:16

Dmitry Medvedev is sworn in as the new Russian President in Kremlin's throne room, to replace his long-time mentor, the powerful Vladimir Putin, May 7, 2008. Dmitry Medvedev was sworn in as Russian president in a solemn ceremony in the Kremlin's throne room on Wednesday, beginning an unprecedented period of dual authority rule with his predecessor Vladimir Putin.

Putin's eight-year presidency was characterized by a booming economy and political stability at home, and Medvedev is expected to continue his predecessor's policies. Dmitry, the 42-year-old new head of state will likely to be confronted with many challenges and difficulties, lay ahead Russia's economic development as inflation gripped the country and has reached double-digits in late 2007, according to the Federal State Statistics Service. The inflation is pushed by a huge inflow of capital at a time when global oil and food prices are witnessing a remarkable hike, posing both economic and political challenges for Russia, an emerging market. Soaring oil prices during Putin's term led to an inflow of petro-dollars, which boosted the economy of the energy-rich nation further soaring of oil prices give its heavy dependence on energy exports.

There are suspicions about how long the boom will last and in this spiraling oil price rise Medvedev would be finding difficult to deal with the West and some neighboring countries, ties with whom relations soured over such issues as the gas price dispute, the planned U.S. missile shield deployment in eastern Europe and the eastward expansion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

the outgoing President Putin called on the Russian nation support Medvedev and gave clarian call to continue on the path toward national development.

"It is now very important to continue the already chosen course of the country's development, guided by citizens' interests, which has already justified itself," Putin told the assembled lawmakers, government officials and foreign diplomats.

The former president's achievements during his two terms, including the consolidation of the Kremlin's power and the improvement of the economy, won him enormous support among Russians.

His remarks came in the backdrop of US first lady Laura Bush"s recent remarks in which she suggested that India could help Yangon in a much better way than the United States, and that Myanmar"s military junta might accept help from New Delhi “more readily".

Speaking at a news conference two days ago, Laura Bush had said “I think India can help. India is close on the border there. I think there are a lot of ways they could help and get help there quickly, and maybe the Burmese government would accept it more readily from the Indian government than they do from the US government".

Meanwhile, McCormack stated that the US government was in touch with the Burmese embassy to encourage access for US assistance and experts.

“We have also been in contact with neighbouring countries to Burma, including Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia, to encourage them to use whatever leverage they may have with the Burmese government to allow assistance teams," he said.

Myanmar restricts entry of aid agencies

by Nksagar @ 2008-05-07 - 09:36:11

Myanmar's General will not allow the aid with entry of foriegn people visiting their country as the nation is clad with iron curtain.General would not like the goverance grip to be loosen at any cost. They are on goverance rule-business from 1962 with their sets of rule and regulation and is famous as reclusive nation.

Myanmar looks for material aid to be handed over to them at borders and financial aid but will not allow the emissaries from other nation susceptible to their integrity and unity.

Her no to the US offer with free access to civilian or aide agencies for help is their long term strategy to remain reclusive nation.

On total contrast to those of Indonesia, a muslim majority country where a tsunami in 2004 left 168,000 people dead and 600,000 people homeless, and in Pakistan, too muslim nation which was devastated by a powerful earthquake killing 74,000 people and displacing 3.5 million in year 2005.

Two countries welcomed US military despite the battered American image in the two countries following the 2003 Iraq invasion.

Indonesia was shaken by the tragedy just two months after taking power, first fully elected president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono gave the green signal to the United States to send its military relief juggernaut to the archipelago.US aircraft carrier to dock in Indonesia's territorial water with US Marines to rub shoulders with troops from the world's most populous Muslim nation.

Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf also allowed American relief workers on the ground within 48 hours after the earthquake struck northwestern Pakistan and Kashmir.

The giant US military twin-rotor Chinook helicopters that put survivors to safety were welcomed as "angels of mercy" in Pakistan, where some militants had previously termed America the "Great Satan."

Myanmar, where people are mostly pro-US, those in Indonesia and Pakistan were largely anti-American prior to the natural disasters that occurred, and the massive US aid helped partly restore Washington's image.

"In Burma (Myanmar), the vast majority of people are already pro-West and they would welcome US presence with open arms and that's why the military regime is suspicious about US military involvement in relief efforts," said Mohan Malik, an expert at the Hawaii-based Asia-Pacific Center for Security Studies.

"Burmese, by and large if you conduct any opinion poll, are very, very pro-America, pro-West and, in fact, want the United States to intervene in Burma militarily," he said.

"That's why the Burmese regime will never allow the United States to come in -- they know the people are fed up with the regime," Malik said

Myanmar welcomes foreign aid

Thai has sent a plane with food aid and essential items to Rangoon.Thailand official are keen to give instant help as their 800 tinnes of rice lay in the Rangoon warehouse."We have 800 tons of rice stock available in Rangoon in our warehouse now, so that will be available for immediate distribution," Paul Risley, spokesperson for the World Food Programme"s (WFP) Thailand office said.

The Irrawaddy casualty count has been rising quickly as authorities reach hard-hit islands and villages in the Irrawaddy delta, formerly famous as “rice bowl of Asia" which bore the brunt of Cyclone Nargis 190 kmph wind which made tens of thousand inhabitents homeless and deprieved of all amentiies.

On Monmday night Myanmar state electronic media reported that Myanmar said on Monday Myanmar welcomes foreign aid for relief and resettlement for the regions hit by deadly cyclone Nargis.

The Myanmar government will also allocate 5 billion Kyats 4.5 million U.S. dollars for the relief and resettlement programme.Further adds a Thai aircraft with relief supplies will arrive in Yangon Tuesday.

Regarding Haing Kyi island in the Ayeyawaddy division more than 20,000 houses were destroyed, leaving ninty three thousand people homeless.

Devastating cyclone, which occurred over the Bay of Bengal, hit five divisions and states Yangon, Bago, Ayeyawaddy, Kayin and Mon for first time with such casualities in Myanmar and has declared the five divisions and Irrawady and Rangoon as natural-disaster-hit regions.

The Myanmar government has formed a national central committee for prevention of natural disaster to promptly and effectively carry out relief and resettlement tasks as reported in the media.

International aid agencies need free access to the states worst affected areas. On this issue the Burmese government and the Burma-based WFP country director were still undergoing dialogoue and WFP awaits for results from observers on the extent of the cyclone"s damage and an assessment on how much aid will be needed.

‘The meeting is to discuss whether international humanitarian assistance of the World Food Programme from the United Nations would be accepted by the government for the country," Risley added.

Nearly 4,000 people are believed dead and thousands more still missing, according to state media reports late Monday. The cyclone swept through the Irrawaddy Delta and the nation"s commercial capital with winds blowing more than 120 mph.

The storm made tree fall on roads, cut phone connections, blocked roads and ripped roofs off houses with a result more than tens of thousands of people are believed lay homeless without any help.

UN and the Red Cross of Burma today started surveying six hard-hit areas.

Cyclone Nargis was ‘very strong cyclone, according to the satellite news, and exact extent of the damage to people"s houses, shelter, in the Irrawaddy division and Rangoon division is awaited.Leaders of Junta have made Helicopter visit.

Flood water is damaging families" food stock, so there may potentially be very critical food assistance needs from the next few days."

The Irrawaddy Delta is main rice-producing region of Burma. which has suffered the most.Myanar which was exporting rices and this region was famous as Rice bowl of Asia, lay with crop damaged as Nargis with its winds 190KM/H devasted the most of delta islands and village habitents homeless.Myanmar may need import of rices with this devastating calamity.

Another aid group, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), is ready to move in. ‘We have people in Burma already working on medical project, and if the Burmese government asks for help, then we will suddenly help," said Chris Lom, the IOM"s regional information officer.

The main needs are shelter and clean water, Lom said. At a meeting with the UN, the agencies discussed providing plastic sheets and a water purification system to prevent water-borne diseases.

‘It"s difficult to say how much will be needed," Lom said. ‘We just don"t know because all telephone lines are down."

International humanitarian groups are finding difficult to work in Burma, due to lack of coordination between various nodal agencies as the state has been ruled by military dictators since 1962.

The Global Fund to fight against AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria withdrew its presence from Burma in 2005, citing restrictions by the Burmese junta on movements of its volunteers.

Similarly, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), citing government restrictions, closed down two of its field offices in Mawlamyine of Mon State and Kyaing Tong of Eastern Shan State.

A nation which lives in veil and does not permit aid submitting countries volunteers to work is making difficult aid reach the survivors.

Both Mx and HySI payloads operate in the visible and near infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The data from this mission will be made available to developing countries.

Eight nanosatellites built by universities and research institutions in Canada and Germany are also being launched under a commercial agreement with Antrix Corporation.

The launch campaign is progressing satisfactorily at SDSC SHAR. The satellite has already been integrated with the launch vehicle and on April 18, 2008, the launch vehicle was moved to the Second Launch Pad at Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota.
